Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

I didn’t understand the whole idea of racism when I was a child until an incident happened to me. I couldn’t understand why the incident happened the way it did.I wasn’t really sad about it after it happened because I got over it quick. My aunt on the other hand was kind of upset. Being that I was young I did not stay sad long because I knew nothing about racism. I could remember that I wanted two balloons when my family and I went to the fair because I saw the little Caucasian girl in the front of me get two balloons. When I got to the front I asked if I could have two and I was told no you are only allowed one but I didn’t understand why and they were free, but the girl in the front of me got two and then when I left I saw the other little Caucasian girl get two. I got upset afterwards because I thought to myself I thought we could only get one, it was then that I found out about racism and what it was from my aunt.  The way that I coped with it was just from the comfort of my aunt telling me not to worry about it and just to continue having a continue to have a good time and that she would take me to get more balloons from the store.

Africa includes some of the poorest countries in the world. In much of Africa south of the Sahara, harsh environmental conditions exacerbate the conditions of poverty. (Fight Poverty, 2006). The country that I would like to know more about when it comes to poverty is one of the third world countries such as Africa. I would like to see why is it that they don’t have enough money or food so that those children can eat and get the proper nutrition they need.  The way that poverty is affecting the development of these children is that they are malnourished and have lots of diseases that can kill them because their country is not a developing county. What is happening now in Africa to stop or reduce poverty is that there is a thing were HBCU students with choices purchase African- manufacturing apparel, including t-shirts, jeans and jackets, from campus stores.

  1. Hi Kyisha,
Nelson Mandela launched 46664 as a way to raise awareness for the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as support humanitarian issues in Africa. Here is a link to this site: http://www.46664.com

Also, there are many organizations that gather clothing for large donations to African countries. I personally donate to them. I have seen so many instances of mother's sacrificing their lives trying to feed their families to reach refuge camps. The fear and helpless feeling they must feel in those moments is so tragic and saddening. Thank you for highlighting such a region with a large amount of stressors for children.

  2. Kyisha it was helpful that your aunt was there to comfort you and explain to you that what you experienced was not your fault. That is why you probably was able to walk away feeling a bit sad but able to continue having a good time. All over the world children experience stress. I think its a great that the students of HBCU to come up with an organizaton that sells African apparel. It gives back to the people of Africa as well as allow people in the U.S to have the chance to learn about the culture of Africa.

  3. Hi Everyone! My heart belongs in Africa, more specifically Namibia. Yes, you are correct there is a lot of poverty, strife, hunger, war and stress in Africa. Each of the 58 countries within Africa has their own culture, sometimes several languages within each country is spoken, several religions are practiced within a country, each country has their own monetary, social, and political system. The geography changes from one country to the next and so do diseases. Many African countries are ruled by leaders who profess democracy, however, in practice it isn't always implemented. Corruption is rife, civil wars are constantly being fought. HIV Aids has left many children orphaned and sometimes suffering from the disease themselves. Malaria is rife in the tropics along with other tropical diseases. Africa is a huge continent with some areas having good rainfall and being fertile. My country alone has 11 official ethnic groups, two groups each have a sub group and within the white population there are three main groups, those who speak English, then Afrikaans and German. All countries in Africa are complex. Africa warms and breaks your heart. Africa is a continent of contrasting beauty and extremes. It is complicated and there is no single solution to her many issues.

  4. Hi Kyisha,
I'm sorry that you had to experience such a racist act. Being so young and not even knowing what racism was. It just solidifies the belief that racism is taught to children. The man handing out the balloons was teaching racism through his actions. We must be careful what we teach our future generation.
